PPF (Paint Protection Film) Aftercare Guide
Your new PPF is like an invisible bodyguard for your paint. Show it some love and it’ll protect your car for years. Here’s how to keep it clean, glossy, and drama-free. 🛡️✨
Surface Prep Before Installation
- We fully decontaminate panels prior to install; any waxes/coatings are removed so the film adheres correctly. There’s a $65 prep/wax-removal fee when needed. See Our Disclosures
- Manufacturers warn that wax/coatings left on paint can interfere with adhesion. See More
First Days / Curing Period
- Wait at least 48–72 hours before washing. Some brands recommend up to 7 days before washing or waxing. XPEL SunTek 3M
- Avoid heavy rain and don’t disturb edges while the film is settling. Touchless or hand wash only after curing. See More
Regular Wash Guidelines
- Hand wash or touchless only. Use pH-neutral soap, a soft microfiber mitt, and the two-bucket method. 3M XPEL Tips
- Work top-down, rinse thoroughly, and dry with microfiber to prevent water spots. SunTek
What to Avoid
- Avoid automatic brush washes; they can scratch the film or lift edges. See More
- If pressure washing, keep the nozzle ~36" away, use a wide fan, and never blast edges. STEK
- Skip abrasive pads/polishes and waxes containing naphtha/kerosene. See More
Spot Cleaning & Tough Contaminants
- Remove bugs, sap, bird droppings, and fuel spills ASAP to prevent staining. 3M Guide
- Soften with warm, soapy water; wipe gently with microfiber; rinse and dry. See More
Self-Healing 101 (Light Swirls/Scratches)
- Many PPFs self-heal with heat. Minor swirls can fade at room temp or faster with warm water or gentle heat. XPEL SunTek
- XPEL notes light marks may self-heal in ~20–30 minutes at room temp; warm water (~120°F) can accelerate. See More
Wax, Sealants & Ceramic Coatings
- Some manufacturers allow non-abrasive, PPF-safe wax once or twice a year (gloss films). Always test a small area first. SunTek
- Do not use pigmented/abrasive waxes or products with naphtha/kerosene. STEK
- Ceramic coatings made for PPF can add hydrophobics and make maintenance easier—ask us for brand-compatible options. See More
Climate & Storage Tips
- Cold isn’t a problem for quality PPF, but don’t remove film in extreme cold; removal is best indoors at ~55°F+ (pro recommended). LLumar/SunTek
- Whenever possible, park in shade/garage to reduce UV/heat stress and keep the film looking fresh. 3M Guide
Post-Wash Checks & Maintenance
- After washing, inspect edges for lifting; repair or replace damaged sections promptly. 3M
- Wash every 1–2 weeks (depending on driving). Quick detailer safe for PPF between washes is fine. See More
